Enterprise Car Rental
Enterprise Rent-A-Car was founded in 1957 but for another reason and in a different name. It was Executive Leasing Company based out of St. Louis, Missouri founded by Jack Taylor with seven vehicles and an idea that consumers would enjoy the concept of leasing an automobile. Then in 1962, being an intelligent business man and listening to the consumer,
Jack added a rental car business division for people who wanted to rent a car while theirs was being repaired in the shop. He took the idea, 17 cars and ran with it; he also opened a Car Sales Division to a rapidly growing business.
Mr. Taylor and his team of business savvy entrepreneurs wanted to take the business and grow it beyond St. Louis, to do this it would have to come at a price. The current name of Executive could not be used in some markets so Jack went back to his days of being a decorated WWII fighter pilot and re-christened the company after the aircraft carrier he served on, the Enterprise. The team at Enterprise realized that the best opportunity for expansion was not at first where everyone thought it was at the airport, it was in the hometowns of people across America where the consumer spends most of their time.
In 1974 a branch manager of
Car Rentals based in Orlando, Florida started a well known company tradition by offering a free ride to the rental office. This sprung the company’s slogan of “We’ll Pick You Up”. With the company rapidly expanding it was time for another large leap.
In 1980 Enterprise opened its first National
Reservation Center where a customer could call a toll free
number and make a reservation for vehicles nationwide. At the
same time the company’s rental vehicle fleet reached 6,000. Nine
years late the company was changing again and to show how wildly
successful the rental car division was the company was rebadged Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
With the company growing by leaps and bounds it was time to go international by opening their first international location in Windsor, Canada in 1993. By this time the company had exploded to over 200,000 rental vehicles in the fleet and over 1,500 locations in North America alone. No long after the company jumped the pond to Europe by opening a location in Reading, England 1994 and in 1995 the company opened its first airport location in Denver, Colorado making the 1990’s a decade of great change and expansion in the company.
To cap the decade off the fleet grew hit the half a million vehicle mark in its rental and leasing fleet and makes it to the 4,000 location mark worldwide. Over 50 years later the company has made it to the top of the rental car industry operating a fleet of well over 800,000 vehicles and 6,000 offices worldwide. Why go anywhere else for a quality vehicle at a great price and an easy to find location at your travel destination or right in your home town.
