Dollar Rent A Car was founded in 1966 Los Angels, California from day one the company has been striving for the best service available in the industry coupled with the best and most competitive prices on the market. The first fleet of rental vehicles was the widely popular Volkswagen Beetle with manual transmissions and no air conditioning.
The company did grow and stake their share in the industry enough for Chrysler to make the company part of its Pentastar Transportation group back in 1990. At that time being owned by Chrysler they only had Chrysler vehicles in their fleet. At the time of the purchase by Chrysler they also purchased a couple other car companies that have since been sold individually, but they kept one and coupled it with dollar, its name is Thrifty Car Rental. Those two companies went public and now are no longer owned by Chrysler and are traded in the New York Stock Exchange as the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc (DTG).
The Dollar Rent A Car company is comprised of corporate-owned and operated locations as well as Dollar Rent A Car Licensee operations that span the globe over. The company spans over 26 countries including the United States, Canada, Mexico, ones in the Caribbean, Central and South America and Australia. They total 640 locations in airports and suburban areas. Their fleet is comprised of mostly American made automobiles being Ford, Gm and Chrysler. The types of cars range from economy to luxury to standard convertible. They also have minivans varying sizes of SUV’s and even a class which they call Mid-sized Open Air All Terrain which features a rag top Jeep Wrangler.
